Nottingham College

Nottingham

The new city hub at Nottingham College opened its doors in November 2020, providing state of the art facilities and resources for more than 2000 students and nearly 300 staff.

The objectives

Working alongside our client Wates Construction Ltd and in conjunction with the Architect Bond Bryan, we were appointed to deliver the design, manufacture and installation of a bespoke reception counter and the bar areas of the building as well as all the loose FF&E.

Working with a number of different parties, it was essential that the installation was as smooth as possible and the end result fitted the vision of the end client, Nottingham College.

The process

LiDR project managed the coordination of nearly 3000 pieces of loose furniture and with a short time frame, this was a challenging aspect of the project delivery.  The 3000 pieces included the manufacture of all panel based products which included tables, cupboards and desks and the procurement and distribution of third party items included items like chairs and some specialist items.

Reception desk

The reception area is spacious and therefore needed to be a welcoming sight as students, staff and visitors entered the building. The counter required the functionality of a working area but also had to create an impact and uphold the style and innovation of the building concept.

The bar and café areas

The bar and café areas have a coordinated design, and provide a stylish, clean and practical area to meet and collaborate.  These areas not only add to the innovative feel of the City Hub but they also add value to the students and staff who use the building.

With this part of the overall project, the team at LiDR worked alongside third parties which included a catering contractor and specialised trades to ensure the specifications of the brief were adhered to and met.

Areas of study

New tables and bespoke pieces create an area for students to meet, plan and study.  The IT stations provide privacy to the students where the more open plan areas allow for collaborative study and the furniture was designed and manufactured to reflect these purposes.

Balcony areas

Having pop up areas to meet and talk maximises the use of space, but they also provide an opportunity to add vibrancy to areas of the building.  Tables and chairs were designed to coordinate with the college branding.

The result

LiDR’s state of the art manufacturing process means that we’re able to react to short turnaround times with agility and flexibility.  In this project, we were able to coordinate loose FF&E packages with only 4 weeks notice, supplying our partners in this project with what they required on time and to specification.

We have worked with Wates Construction for many years and have a long standing reputation of delivering high quality products while managing each project successfully.  The timeframe was challenging, but the utilisation of strong partnerships meant we were able to meet and exceed the expectations for the end client, Nottingham College.

What Wates Construction says…

“We’ve worked with LiDR Contract Furniture on a number of projects, and they never fail to deliver.  The team incorporated all the requirements needed and nothing is impossible.  They had a short time frame in which to design, deliver and install the pieces of furniture and the end client was delighted with the result.”
